A Living Heritage

An Ancient Temple, Rising Again

On the left bank of the holy river Kaveri, hidden among groves of palmyra and a 600-year-old sacred Arasa tree, stands the Arulmigu Kalinga Nardhana Sri Krishnar Temple of Pallipalayam Agraharam. For more than four centuries Madhva acharyas have lit lamps here for Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

Before 1865, the Diwan of Mysore Samasthanam, Sri Purnaiah, visited this temple and was so moved by the Lord that he gifted lands to it and named the agraharam ‘Dwarakapuri’ — the southern Dwaraka of Sri Krishna. Today, the temple is being lovingly rebuilt by devotees and the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department.

The Sacred History

Before 1865 · The Naming of Dwarakapuri

Sri Purnaiah, Diwan of Mysore, gifts lands and names the agraharam Dwarakapuri after Lord Krishna’s northern abode.

1802 · Lineage of Acharyas

Sri Narasimha Murthy Acharya begins generations of seva, carrying the temple’s puja unbroken.

1924, 1954, 1961 · The Great Floods

The Kaveri rises and submerges the temple for days. The stone garbhagriha endures; the prakaram walls fall.

1996 · A Devotee Returns

Sri Bindu Madhava Rao, descendant of the original acharyas, rebuilds the compound walls with the support of the village.

2024 · Reconstruction Begins

HR&CE appoints trustees. Sthapathis study the temple; Balalayam is performed; the rebuilding begins.
